A mental disorder or mental illness is a psychological or behavioral pattern that occurs in an individual and is thought to cause disability that is not expected as part of normal development. A mental illness may be possibly caused by several factors such as genetics, environment, and chemical imbalances in the brain. It is called mental merely because usually, the illness does not engage much anatomical dysfunctions. Usually, the disorder involves a thinking that something is wrong when physically, it seemed as if nothing is wrong. The symptoms are more internal rather than external. People may think that it is normal for someone to be talking to himself for a while. However, when this symptom last longer, longer than a certain period and disrupts bodily functions, then a mental illness may be diagnosed.

Everyone has their abnormal persona. We all have that craziness within us. It is just a matter of how we manage our differences and extremities that we are able to handle our craziness. Moreover, many ask if mental illnesses really do exist. The English-speaking world has not always used medical language to describe the behavior we now label as symptomatic of mental disorder. Illlustrations were sometimes framed in quite different terms, such as possession. What we now call mental illness was not always treated as a medical problem. Non-English-speaking nations in the West have had changes in their linguistic usage and their treatment of the mentally ill roughly parallel to Anglophone countries. Anthropological work in non-Western cultures suggests that there are many cases of behavior that psychiatry would categorize as symptomatic of mental disorder, which are not seen within their own cultures as signs of mental illness.

However, nowadays, it has been argued that mental disorders are really existing mental conditions that may be a reason of disruption in a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a decreasing capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.

Mental illnesses can affect persons of any age, race, religion, or income. Mental illnesses are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing. Mental illnesses are treatable. Most people diagnosed with a serious mental illness can experience relief from their symptoms by actively participating in an individual treatment plan. In addition to medication treatment, psychosocial treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, peer support groups and other community services can also be components of a treatment plan and that assist with recovery. The availability of transportation, diet, exercise, sleep, friends and meaningful paid or volunteer activities contribute to overall health and wellness, including mental illness recovery.

Unfortunately, society may be responsible for one’s failure in recovering form a mental illness. When the person is cured inside a medical institution, he or she is given sufficient treatment and is treated as if they are normal. They are given proper care and attention so as to promote recovery. However, when they go out into the real world after some time, society, upon knowing their past, would most likely mock them and treat them differently. Society would look at them as someone who still has the mental disorder and resultingly, it would make them feel worse and thus, could trigger an occurrence of the mental illness once again.

A person afflicted with a mental illness would feel less of himself. He would think that he I not worthy to live in this world given that he could not function properly anymore. However, support from family and friends would be a great help for the patient to view life differently and positively. Thus it is the role of the family to provide the patient with love and care so as to sustain his recovery.

The chemical cocaine hydrochloride is commonly known as crack. There are users who chemically process cocaine in order to eradicate the hydrochloride. This procedure is called “freebasing” and makes the drug more stronger. “Crack” is a concrete form of freebased cocaine. It is called “crack” because it snaps and cracks when heated and smoked. Since crack is a ready form of freebased cocaine, the user does not have to buy the equipment associated with freebasing. Crack is normally in plastic bags and sold in small quantities, usually 300-500mg or enough for two to three inhalations.

Cocaine was regarded as a status drug in the year 1970s for the reason that cocaine was pricey. The beginnings of cheap crack increased the ease of access of this substance, and crack has become the drug of choice for many drug users, especially for inner-city disadvantaged youth. This has been the beginnings of the growing crack addiction. Crack’s accessibility, ease of concealment, wide availability, and low cost has increased its use. The reality that crack is smoked rather than snorted has contributed to its popularity.

The preconceived notion that drug addiction only happens on the street is largely false. It is a common fact that celebrities have their “shining moments” when it comes to substance dependence. They may look pleasant and very much happy in front of cameras, but their deepest secrets are yet to be revealed. A number of celebrities have already been into rehabilitation to fight their crack addiction, heroin, or even alcohol addiction.

Drew Barrymore was one of the very early celebrity known that spearheaded headlines because of her wild child antics. At the age of nine, Drew was already smoking cigarettes. She was an alcoholic at 11, a marijuana smoker by 12, and a cocaine addict by 13. She went to rehab twice and even attempted suicide when she was 14. Right now, that is all in the past. Her wild child days behind her, Barrymore has grown into a sober, responsible and productive woman. Aside from starring in a slew of hits, she has also become a producer, forming the production company Flower Films with friend and partner Nancy Juvonen in 1995. Her company is responsible for hits like Charlie’s Angels and 50 First Dates. This goes to show that anybody messed up with drugs can revive from life.

In the controversial Oprah-Winfrey-was-a-drug-addict tale, there are two known sides. On one hand, there’s the unforgettable TV moment in the 90s when she tearfully admitted in her own talk show that she had smoked crack cocaine while in her 20s, but never said anything about dependence on the drug or anything else. On the other hand, there’s the more recent allegation made in a tell-all book by a former boyfriend that Oprah was actually a regular cocaine user in the 80s, and was in fact under the influence during her show tapings.

Right now, we can clearly see that Oprah Winfrey has triumphed over the use of cocaine. As of September 2008, Forbes has listed Oprah to acquire wealth worth over $2.7 billion. CNN and Time Magazine called her “arguably the world’s most powerful woman”. She is quite the success story, sordid drug past or not.

Anyone of all walks of life could be a victim of crack addiction. Life is largely unpredictable. On a certain point we are having a good laugh with friends living the good life, the next time we know, we are shaking and craving for a drug we never thought we couldn’t seem to live without. People may be aware of the effects of drugs if abused, yet they still give in to curiosity, probably, or to pressure and thus end up living miserably. However, there is still hope for every addict in this world. Life doesn’t end in addiction. It ends when one gives up.

Emotions are a part of life. It is part of being human. In fact, it is what makes us human. We laugh when we are happy, we cry when we are sad and disappointed, and we let out our rage when we are furious and mad. And, that is natural. Everyday, we express various emotions more than we could envision. Typically, situations that we encounter trigger these emotions. And the body, as emotional feelings are natural to it, is able to manage with these expressions of emotions through a cycle. As psychologists would say, an individual does not feel the same emotion over a very long period of time. What we feel sooner or later changes. To be specific, the longest time you could feel happy is ten days. After that, the feeling of happiness sinks, probably shifting to anxiety or sadness.

However, sometimes, there are people who are not able to adjust to certain events in their lives and are unable to control their emotions and deal with what they are feeling. Just like alcoholism, emotional problem is a serious problem. One is not able to function well due to the disruption of its emotions. Usually, people would make use of defense mechanisms as to cover up their emotional problems. However, this would in turn cause some commotion in their daily lives. And, moreover, it could affect the people around them. Moreover, emotional problems could be caused by alcoholism or any addiction problems. When one is addicted, the person does not only become physically attached to the object of addiction, but also he or she becomes emotionally attached to the object of addiction.

Just like Alcoholics Anonymous, Emotions Anonymous is a twelve-step organization. It provides to people whose emotions are causing difficulties in their lives. Emotions such as depression, anxiety, fear, loneliness, anger, compulsion, and obsessions are the most common in which the members had to deal with. Emotions Anonymous was started on July 6, 1971. Emotions Anonymous meetings are self-supporting by intentional contributions of its members. Emotions Anonymous is not tied up with any sect, denomination, politics, organization, or institution, nor does it endorse or oppose any causes. The primary purpose of Emotions Anonymous is to show its members how to stay well emotionally and how to help others to become emotionally well.

This is the twelve-step program being used by Emotional Anonymous:

1. We admitted we were powerless over our emotions — that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

With emotions anonymous, people in all walks of life are able to look for aid from others and may find comfort and direction from those who have been there and had done that, or even share sympathy with people are experiencing the same thing. Indeed, social support is very important and could be a cure to emotional illness.

A woman is largely at risk and susceptible to toxins and other harmful substances when she is pregnant. Alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs are substances known as teratogens. Teratogens are substances that cause negative effects towards the fetus inside the mother’s womb. These substances would in turn result to a sick or worse, abnormal baby.

Alcohol is one teratogen that could greatly affect the woman’s pregnancy. People may not know of its danger and still allow a woman to drink alcoholic drinks during her pregnancy, but the result of this would be carried by the baby for the rest of his or her life. Alcohol is one of the known causes of mental and physical birth defects specifically in the United States. Though, this is only a possibility, the rate is high.

For one, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is a disorder that can occur to the embryo when a pregnant woman ingests alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol crosses the placental barrier and can inhibit fetal weight, create distinctive facial stigmata, damage neurons and brain structures, and cause other physical, mental, or behavioral problems. The main effect of FAS is lasting central nervous system damage, especially to the brain. Developing brain cells and structures are underdeveloped by prenatal alcohol exposure, often creating an array of primary cognitive and functional disabilities including poor memory, attention deficits, impulsive behavior, and poor cause-effect reasoning, as well as secondary disabilities for example, mental health problems, and drug addiction.

The signs and symptoms of a having fetal alcohol syndrome are low birth mass, small head circumference, developmental delay, organ dysfunction, facial abnormalities, including smaller eye openings, flattened cheekbones, and indistinguishable philtrum (an underdeveloped groove between the nose and the upper lip), epilepsy, poor management, poor socialization skills, such as difficulty building and maintaining friendships and relating to groups, lack of curiosity, learning difficulties, including poor memory, inability to understand concepts such as time and money, poor language comprehension, poor problem-solving skills, behavioral problems including hyperactivity, inability to concentrate, social withdrawal, stubbornness, impulsiveness, and anxiety.

The primary characteristic of fetal alcohol syndrome is the damage it brings in the central nervous system. Central nervous system damage can be assessed in three areas such as structural, neurological, and functional impairments. Structural deficiencies includes microcephaly (small head size) of two or more standard deviations below the average, or other abnormalities in brain structure. During the first trimester of pregnancy, alcohol impedes with the migration and organization of brain cells, which can make structural deficits within the brain. During the third trimester, damage can be caused to the hippocampus, which plays a role in memory, learning, emotion, and encoding visual and auditory information, all of which can create neurological and functional CNS impairments as well.

When structural impairments are not observable, neurological impairments are assessed. Neurological problems are showed as either hard signs, such as epilepsy or other seizure disorders, or soft signs. Soft signs are broader, nonspecific neurological impairments, such as impaired fine motor skills, neurosensory hearing loss, poor gait, clumsiness, poor eye-hand coordination.

When structural or neurological impairments are not observed, all four diagnostic systems allow CNS damage due to prenatal alcohol exposure to be assessed in terms of functional impairments. Functional impairments are delays due to prenatal alcohol exposure (rather than hereditary causes or postnatal insults) in observable and measurable domains related to daily functioning, often referred to as developmental disabilities.

The production of birth deficiencies is not a measure on the amount of alcohol being ingested. There are differences in the processing’s of alcohol in women. Other factors vary the results, too, such as the age of the mother, the timing and regularity of the alcohol ingestion, and whether the mother has eaten any food while drinking.

Alcohol quickly goes through the placental barrier and the fetus is less equipped to get rid of alcohol than its mother, so the fetus tends to receive a high concentration of alcohol, which stays behind longer than it would in the mother’s system. this is the reason why the child is the one greatly affected when in fact it is the mother who consumes the alcohol. This such a sad truth.

The belief that a highest being has the power and control of the universe is called spirituality. It is the knowledge of the purpose and meaning of life and the development of personal, absolute values. Typically, when we say spirituality, religion is associated. But, although spirituality is associated with religious life, many think that personal spirituality can be developed outside of religion. Acts of compassion and selflessness, altruism, and the experience of inner peace are all characteristics of spirituality.

Moreover, spirituality is the belief that admission to self that God does have control of your life and that it is possible to turn to God with your problems. It is God’s spirit that can provide for you the strength and courage to face your problems. It is the recognition that you do not have to burn yourself out fraught to solve all your problems on your own. It is the openness to let go of your sense of over-responsibility and let God have some influence over the problems. Spirituality is also the identification that humans consist not only of physical matter but also have a spiritual dimension that needs daily care in order to survive.

Faith, hope, and love are the three foundations of spirituality. Faith is what makes the person to believe that a supreme being is helping them in times of trouble, sorrow, and pain. Faith is the belief that God will never desert or forget you during your time of need. Furthermore, spirituality is quickly identified in people who have hope and trust in God’s mercy, wisdom and justice. Their hope makes them to “let go and let God.” Their hope enables them to hand over their sense of over responsibility, guilt, rescuing and enabling to God’s hands. Their hope enables them to take a “tough love” stance in order to get assistance for the troubled persons in their lives. There is also spirituality when one gives love, concern, and generosity to other people. With spirituality, people are altruistic and giving in their approach to the world. They are able to make a difference in people’s lives.

The border between spirituality and religion rises a conflict. The two terms may be sometimes used by people interchangeably, yet one should be clarified with its distinction. Religion is an institution established by man for various reasons- exert control; instill morality, stroke egos, or whatever it does. On the other hand, spirituality is born in a person and develops in the person. It may be kick started by a religion, or it may be kick started by a revelation. Spirituality extends to all facets of a person’s life. Spirituality is chosen while religion is often times forced.

Personally, I believe that spirituality is deeper than religion. As what was said, religion is most of the time forced, thus, usually, people carry out religious rituals out of obedience to the religious tradition. But, true spirituality is something that is found deep within oneself. It is a way of loving, accepting and relating to the world and people around. It cannot be found in a church or by believing in a certain way.

Yes, there is such a thing as sex addiction as well as love addiction. It is not just merely crazily stalking a person you especially like. It is an illness, probably a mental illness that entails compulsivity when it comes to sexual activities and having numerous partners, and being fond of casual sex and self gratification. Sex and love addiction is a progressive illness which cannot be cured but which, like many illnesses, can be arrested. It may take several forms—which includes, but not limited to a compulsive need for sex, excessive dependency on one or many people, or a chronic worry with romance, intrigue, or fantasy, an obsessive compulsive pattern, either sexual or emotional, or both, exists in which relationships or sexual activities have become increasingly destructive to career, family and sense of self-respect. Sex addiction and love addiction, if left unchecked, always gets worse.

The sex and love addiction anonymous was founded to cater to those who have been a victim of this addiction to sex and love. This was created by a former Alcoholics anonymous member. Though, he had been sober, he was unfaithful to his wife for a period of time. He founded sex and love addiction anonymous as an try to discontinue his compulsive sexual and romantic behavior.

“Bottom-line behaviors” are persuaded to be identified on members of the organization. The organization classifies these behaviors as “any sexual or emotional act, no matter what its initial impulse may be, which leads to loss of control over rate, frequency, or duration of its occurrence or recurrence, resulting in spiritual, mental, physical, emotional, and moral damage of oneself and others.”

In addition, the Sex and Love Addiction Anonymous uses the 12-step program and the 12 traditions in helping their members recover from the addiction. The excellent thing with the organization is that since everyone is a victim, they are empathic about each other’s experiences and feelings. Thus, they claim to understand what the other person is going through and are able to offer support through sharing and meetings. To quote, “we found in each other what we could find nowhere else: people who knew the depth of our pain. Together we found hope and the care of a loving Higher Power. Our commitment is to help others recover from sexual addiction, just as we have been helped.”

The twelve step-Program of Sex and Love Addiction Anonymous states that:

1. We admitted we were powerless over sex and love addiction – that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood God.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with a Power greater than ourselves, praying only for knowledge of God’s will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to sex and love addicts, and to practice these principles in all areas of our lives.

Meanwhile, these are their Twelve Traditions:

1. Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon S.L.A.A. unity.

2. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority — a loving God as this Power may be expressed through our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.

3. The only requirement for S.L.A.A. membership is the desire to stop living out a pattern of sex and love addiction. Any two or more persons gathered together for mutual aid in recovering from sex and love addiction may call themselves an S.L.A.A. group, provided that as a group they have no other affiliation.

4. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or S.L.A.A. as a whole.

5. Each group has but one primary purpose — to carry its message to the sex and love addict who still suffers.

6. An S.L.A.A. group or S.L.A.A. as a whole ought never to endorse, finance, or lend the S.L.A.A. name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, or prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

7. Every S.L.A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.

8. S.L.A.A. should remain forever nonprofessional, but our service centers may employ special workers.

9. S.L.A.A. as such ought never to be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

10. S.L.A.A. has no opinion on outside issues; hence the S.L.A.A. name ought never to be drawn into public controversy.

11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, TV, film, and other public media. We need guard with special care the anonymity of all fellow S.L.A.A. members.

12. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

Narcotics Anonymous is a nonprofit organization that works for the recovery of drug addicts. It follows a twelve step program and it is group-oriented. It defines itself as a society of men and women for whom drugs had become a disturbing problem.

The longing to discontinue the use of drugs is the only prerequisite necessary for on to join Narcotics Anonymous. They meet regularly to help each other stay clean, clean meaning a complete abstinence form all mood and mind altering substances. A non-profit organization, thus no fees are required to become a member.

Narcotics Anonymous provides a place for drug addicts to recover aside from rehabilitation centers. Typically, addicts initially enter narcotics anonymous after reaching a “bottom” in their life, a point at which life feels completely unmanageable, characterized by “unemployability, dereliction and destruction” and centered around the getting and using and finding ways and means to get more drugs. Every Narcotics Anonymous member reaches a different bottom, which can be wherever the addict chooses to stop using. In practice, it is drug use and the extreme consequences associated with its abuse that convey most addicts to their bottom many of them sliding along ‘this bottom’ for many years often cannot find their way out.

Regular meetings are the basic unit of Narcotics Anonymous fellowship. Gatherings are held in a array of places such as church meeting rooms, libraries, hospitals, community centers, parks, or any other place that can accommodate a meeting. “Open” and “closed” meetings are the two basic types of meetings practiced in Narcotics Anonymous. In open meetings, everybody is welcome while in closed meetings, addicts and individuals who think they have drug problems are the people who can only attend.

Meeting formats vary, but most of the time it comprise time devoted to the reading aloud of Narcotics Anonymous literature with regards to the issues implicated in living life clean which is in print by and for members of Narcotics Anonymous. Many meetings also include an “open sharing” part, where anyone attending has the opportunity to share. There is normally no direct criticism during the ‘share’, thus only one person ever speaks at any given time during this share of the meeting.

Each group has only one primary purpose that is to carry the message to the addict who still suffers. As a result, the newcomer is considered to be the most important person in any meeting. Hope is the essential message of Narcotics Anonymous. The one guarantee of narcotics anonymous is that an addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, drop the desire to use, and learn a new way of life. Through the twelve step program and the twelve traditions, the members are given hope for a new life worth living and fighting for.

Every individual has many potentials which translates to every life should not be put to waste. He or she may fail, as in becoming enslaved by worldly things such as drugs, but a person is also skilled of standing up from the fall and looking forward once again. Thus, the Narcotics Anonymous, focusing on people who are victims of drug addiction, speaks to these people of how wonderful life still is and that addiction does not mean the end, it is just a middle stage for a new and better life.

Narcotics Anonymous are now based in different areas in the world. The organization is trying to make a difference. These organizations have but one message to get across, that in times of darkness, such as falling into the pit of drug addiction, you are not alone in this battle. The Narcotics Anonymous is there to support you and help you stand up and fight for your life.

Like any other drugs, once abused, meth addiction could result to harmful effects towards the user’s body. Upon entering the brain, meth triggers the fast release of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine which regulate feelings of pleasure. It is highly active in mesolimbic reward pathways of the brain which causes intense euphoria.

Meth has a stimulating outcome on sex, mood, and energy. Methamphetamine may cause weight loss and appetite suppression. It also has positive effects on the body, like providing one to be alert and having the capacity to concentrate. Like any other drugs, tolerance develops overtime with continuous use of meth. It tires out the brain’s store of dopamine and destroys the wiring of dopamine receptors. The drug’s pleasurable effect is not everlasting. Negative effects on the body takes place once the user of meth takes increasing amount due to tolerance. Users usually elicit poor judgment and dangerous behaviors such as committing petty and violent crimes. To maintain the pleasurable effect of the drug, the user is likely to take in increasing doses which in turn results to the destruction of body organs, mental disorders, and even death. Long-time users of this drug have been known to develop symptoms of psychosis, like paranoia, aggression, hallucinations, and delusions. In addition, physical effects of meth use are diarrhea, palpitations, and dizziness, jaw clenching and facial ticks. Meth can also lead to heart failure since it increases heart rate. Other consequences include bronchial dilation, dilation of the blood vessels to the skeletal muscles, dilation of pupils and the emptying of the bladder and intestine.

Meth addiction is prevalent in the United States. There are 1.4 million meth users in America, and it does not stop there. With the number of meth users increasing, the government is quite helpless. While readily available, meth is very inexpensive. Meth’s key object is the youth most especially those problematic ones; ravaged by broken homes, neglect and little parental influence. A report from the National Association of Countries revealed that meth users comes from the different spectrum of the youth: from high school and college students to white and blue-collar workers.

What pushes people to using meth? Meth is easy to use, cheap, and could work as an energy booster. The immediate but temporary benefits of using meth is the once that greatly attract people to use this drug.

Methamphetamine addiction greatly damages a person’s life. Once addicted to it, the symptoms could lead to undesirable and unhealthy behaviors. Moreover, depriving the body from taking in meth would lead to depression, aggression, anxiety, fatigue, paranoia, and intense craving for the drug.

Fighting addiction is such a hard and painful thing to do. It is like pulling your hair on your head one by one until nothing is left. It’s that painful. It is not a one-time thing. Most of all, it wouldn’t work if it is a forced thing. The person addicted to meth should be first of all, be very willing and determined to battle the addiction and get rid of it for good. The motivation should not come from the people around the meth users. It should only come from the self. One should first accept the problem before doing something about it. Quite a number of meth-specific program solutions have been developed. The purpose of treatment is to train the addict new skills that will help cope with the user’s drug cravings and prevent relapses. Meth treatment therapies involve individual and small group approaches. Treatment allows the patient to see beyond the immediate positive effects of drug use and lead them to see the negative effects that inevitably follow. Moreover, recovered addicts are taught to manage their lives more successfully, increase their confidence and self-esteem, and set positive personal goals.

When you get addicted to something, it is difficult to veer yourself away from that addiction. Addiction is akin to letting go of a loved one, we know that letting it go is the right thing to do, but we find it hard to do it because we know it would hurt so bad. The determination to do should start within one’s self.

While going to college I have seen first hand how a twelve step campus can benefit an individual. I myself am not an addict to food, booze or drugs but I do have family and friends who fall into those categories. One best friends decided to try a 12 step programon campus ninety days ago and the results have been incredible. She has taken that courageous first step of admission, and surrendered her pride to a higher power alongside a group of supporters. This has enabled her to stay in control one day at a time. The twelve step campus she is a member of gives her the courage to stand tall in tough situations where her addiction could normally get the better of her. Within ninety days she has improved her positive energy, her healthy habits and most of all, her happiness. She writes in her book every evening after doing her homework and before going to bed, about the journey she accomplished that day. She calls her sponsor at 6:45 every morning before class to discuss her plan for the day. The amount of resolve she has to this twelve step program is admirable and makes me question what I’m missing out on. I claim no uncontrollable vice of my own, but is that the truth?

Her newfound way of life brings me to question my own habits while living on campus. I started to think that there may be an area or two in my life that could use some attention. I decided to do some research. What I found quite shocked me. There is literally a anonymous group at my school for almost everything! From cluttering to overeating! And if there isn’t one, then surely it could be brought up with the campus administration and arranged. I still don’t know which aspect of myself I’d like to attend to the most I think sometimes it may be an anger management program, or procrastinators anonymous. If there is a program on campus for manic depressiveness, that would certainly be my group. But I’m curious to know if a bunch of us manic depressives gather every week in the same place, would their cycles align? I can see it now. One day everyone in the room is ready to just frown and pass out, and then next week we decide to throw a party with a banner that says, “Nothing Can Stop Us!!!!” I don’t know. There are certainly things that I can improve on, and maybe I need some sort of intervention to find out what my main problem is. I suppose that if it’s a big enough problem, it will find me. But until then I continue to draw inspiration from watching this brave college student change her life one day at a time.

But as well as making me question my own issues, her new ways have been rubbing off on me Because we are so close her lifestyle has a profound effect on my own and we tend to mimic each other’s habits. In this case, because her lifestyle has changed for the positive and I am entirely supportive, I no longer eat as much. All said and done, I have an enormous respect for my college for providing 12 step programs to help people gain control over the things they do not have the strength to overcome alone. I have seen first hand the light that can shine as a result.

Addiction, as usually defined, is a physical dependence on a substance, in the case of drug addiction. Once an individual gets dependent on a substance, he or she is not able to function well and may feel physical pains when he or she doesn’t take in the drug. This is because the drug has by now affected the chemical balance in the brain allowing the person’s system to crave for the certain drug in order to achieve stability. Much worse is that the body later on tolerates the substance that enters the system, thus, resulting to a higher dosage requirement the next time the drug is taken to achieve the desired result.

From its very classification, addiction is the state of being enslaved to a habit , such narcotics, to such an extent that its discontinuation causes distress. This distress can range in intensity from intense cravings to life threatening illness (depending on the drug), making it virtually impossible for an addict to stop without help. Because most withdrawal symptoms can be relieved instantly upon use of the drug that the body is withdrawing from, the desire to use that drug is remarkably high in this period, often resulting in defeat of the healing before it can even begin.

As the addict recognizes the problem, the treatment process is another cross to carry. Treating addiction means eliminating the dependency on the drug. This would mean that the person had to stop taking the drug. However, reducing the body of an addict from taking in the drug would lead to withdrawal symptoms. And it is not easy having to deal with these symptoms. The severity of the symptoms depends on the kind of drug the person is addicted to. Moreover, to ease the pain of the withdrawal symptoms, detoxification should be done.

The process of detoxification is the cleansing of the toxins in our body. Relating this to, it is the taking away of the drug residues from the body and controlling the symptoms of withdrawal. Detoxification is not the whole treatment process but it is the first step towards recovery. Taking away the toxins that have been controlling the body system of the patient should be done first before any behavioral based theraphy which would cure the causal factors of addiction.

Drug detoxification can be referred to as the period of withdrawal during which the person’s body eventually returns to balance after long-term use of an addictive substance. The process may vary depending on the kind of addiction.

Detoxification can be done on both inpatient and outpatient basis. Inpatient detoxification will agree to close monitoring on the patient. With these, the contact to the substance of abuse could be avoided. On the other hand, outpatient detoxification allows greater social support. In comparison to inpatients, patients in outpatient treatment retain greater freedom, continue with their day-to-day activities with fewer disruptions. However, with outpatient treatment, there is an higher threat of relapse since the patient is more likely to be exposed with the substance of abuse.

The process of drug detoxification seeks to lessen the severity of the trauma associated with the body’s withdrawal from dependence on a particular drug by medically alleviating and monitoring the intense physical symptoms associated with stopping drug use. Once the drug is emptied from the system and the pain and discomfort associated with stopping its use have been alleviated, the other reasons contributing to the addiction, such as the emotional and psychological issues, can be taken cared of.

Addiction is a very serious problem among the many people in all walks of life. This problem requires serious treatment that requires self-determination, and self-will to be able to overcome the first phase of recovery. The curing process is to be deal very hard everyday.
